Micro-silica or Silica fume is an unstructured polymorph of Silicon dioxide. It is a secondary product of high purity quartz with a carbo-thermic decrease process in electric arc heating system in the construction of silicon and ferrosilicon alloys. Effects of silica fume in concrete


The effect of silica fume in concrete is immense. It has a high surface area affecting the agility of water with concrete; apartheid and oozing of concrete are essentially reduced. It decreases harmful ions and calcium hydroxide content in the dispersion resulting in a higher confrontation with sulphate attack.

Because of its great refinement and very high vague silicon dioxide content, silica-based additives are responsive when added to Portland cement. When it mixed with Portland cement it responds chemically and discharges calcium hydroxide to produce supplementary binder material recognized as calcium silicate hydrate. It offers an additional uniform distribution and a higher capacity of hydration products.
